Events at Dalby Forest - Dalby Forest Courtyard

Get ready to unleash your creativity and learn new techniques in a fun and interactive setting. This hands-on workshop will be led by the talented artist Sue Slack, who will guide you through the process of creating your own unique mixed media art book.

Simply made zig zag books are a great way to collect information whilst outside sketching. On this workshop Sue will take you into the forest to gather information by noting down words, sounds and images you see. You will then spend the rest of the day working on a zig zag ‘book’ inspired by your experience of being in the forest. The initial stages of creating your zig zag book will be quite structured, but by the afternoon, you will be set free to make it your own.

Responding to being out in the forest, using techniques including, contour drawing, ‘blind’ drawing and sound drawing. Inside we will be using various mark-making tools such as charcoal, pencil, ballpoint pen, white and clear oil pastel and Poska pens. We’ll be using inks, paper collage, printing and rubbing techniques.

It will become a personal record of your day and of your response to being immersed in the forest for even just a short while.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to explore your artistic side and connect with fellow art enthusiasts. No experience necessary, all materials included.

Bring warm clothes and shoes suitable for being outdoors in the winter, and an apron (if you want) to protect your clothes while making. Bring a packed lunch, or utilise the fantastic Courtyard Cafe

About the artist

Sue is known for her brightly coloured acrylic landscapes. She says that it is the shape of the land that draws her in. Most of her compositions are inspired by the walking and running routes she does with her dog on the North York Moors. Sue likes best to work outside, responding immediately to what she see. She has recently begun to diversify her practice and feels she is on a journey, exploring new ways of working in mixed media and collage. More intimate garden and natural settings are the current inspiration for her work as she aims to capture something of the spirit of place.
