Cuckney Hay, Oakfield & Pleasley Forest Plan

Cuckney Hay, Oakfield & Pleasley Forest Plan

About

The Cuckney Hay, Oakfield and Pleasley Forest Plan sets out our management proposals for the next 50 years and facilitates approval for felling and thinning, both conventional and unconventional, for the next 10 years.

All of the woodlands in the plan lie within 6 miles of Mansfield.

The plan contains areas of high importance for Economy, Wildlife and People and will set out how Cuckney Hay, Oakfield and Pleasley will continue to deliver for these priorities in the next 10 years and beyond.

Objectives

The main objectives for the Cuckney Hay, Oakfield and Pleasley Forest Plan are:

Economic

  • Continue a structured and sustained programme of timber production through clearfell and thinning to include infrastructure requirements.
  • Select suitable species and appropriate silvicultural techniques to regenerate (either naturally or through planting) commercially productive but more structurally and species diverse and resilient crops.

Environmental

  • Maintain the current extent and ecological value of the non-designated priority habitats.
  • Identify key species and sites and make appropriate provision for their requirements.
  • Make appropriate species choices for ASNW/PAWS areas.

Social

  • Recognise and make provision for heritage on the site.
  • Diversify species composition and structure, and plan sympathetically designed and appropriately scaled interventions to improve and maintain the visual integration of the forest into the wider landscape.
  • Recognise the location and scale of demand in making appropriate provision for public access.

What we’ll do

Planned operations within the 10 year period of the plan are summarised below:

  • Felling of 7.1ha of conifers and 1.7ha of broadleaves.
  • Thinning of 230ha.
  • Restocking 8.8ha of broadleaves.

The species composition will also change from 20.5% conifers, 75.6% broadleaves and 3.9% open in 2018 to 0.2% conifers, 95.5% broadleaves and 4.3% open in 2068.

All of our forests and woodlands in this Forest District are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). All Forestry England forests and woods are independently certified as sustainably managed, to continue to benefit future generations.
