Woods for Wood White Presentation

Join us for an engaging talk on the stunning Wood White butterfly (Leptidea sinapis). Learn how Forestry England is working with Butterfly Conservation and Shropshire Hills National Landscapes to create habitat for the nationally significant species at Bury Ditches, Iron-Age Hillfort.

During the talk, we'll cover the lifecyle of this fascinating species, how to identify it and its food plants, and share how you can get involved with surveying and conservation work parties.

What is Woods for Wood White?

Populations of Wood White butterfly have declined due to changes in woodland management and agriculture. However, this endangered species thrives in the hilly terrain occupied by areas of woodland across Shropshire. These ‘islands’ of woodland provide refuge for this species that requires nutrient-poor ride-side and glade habitat, of which Bury Ditches is an important example.

The project aims to maintain and improve ride side habitat and scallop refugia to support locally and nationally significant populations of the Wood White butterfly (Leptidea sinapis), in the forest surrounding the Bury Ditches Iron-Age hill fort in the Shropshire Hills. This project will conserve vulnerable ride-side habitat via contractors and local Butterfly Conservation volunteers. It will raise awareness of the Wood White species and its importance to the Shropshire Hills landscape.

We are grateful to work with Butterfly Conservation on this project. Butterfly Conservation strive for a world where butterflies and moths thrive and can be enjoyed by everyone.
