Trail Diversions (Thinning)

Forest Thinning and its impact on you

Diversions to trails at Thetford will begin on the 21 June. Please see the map below for the most up to date routes.

Beater long loop and Shepherd Trail diverted: Expected until August 12th

The tree thinning programme will begin in the block of forest we know as High Lodge, which extends from Brandon to Thetford. These operations will take place over several months and are an integral part of our forest management approach. Visitors are advised that the trails may be altered or diverted at different times during the thinning process. It is important to stay informed about these changes. Detailed information and updates regarding the modified trails can be found here, on this website as well as our social media channels. A map is available detailing the diversions at the bottom of this page.

What is tree thinning?

Thinning is a carefully planned and executed technique that involves selectively removing some trees from the forest, allowing the remaining trees to thrive and grow stronger. Our dedicated team of forestry professionals will assess each woodland area within High Lodge to determine the optimal thinning approach. Factors such as species diversity, tree age, and overall forest health will be considered to ensure the best possible outcomes.

The main objectives of our thinning operations are to create more breathing room for the remaining trees, improving their access to essential resources like sunlight, water, and nutrients. This promotes healthier growth and development while also enhancing the overall ecological balance of the forest. Thinning also increases the forest's resilience against diseases, pests, and extreme weather conditions, ensuring its long-term viability.

Staying safe during the work

As we embark on these thinning operations, you may observe varying degrees of activity throughout the forest. This includes tree felling, timber extraction, and the appearance of timber stacks in different areas. Additionally, you may encounter timber lorries transporting the harvested timber out of the forest. This will affect our trails and their normal routes.

While we understand that these operations may temporarily change the forest's appearance, we prioritize the safety of all visitors, staff, and the forest ecosystem. It is crucial that you adhere to all safety signage and diversions in place. Please refrain from touching or climbing on timber stacks, as they pose potential risks. We urge everyone to exercise caution and refrain from accessing prohibited areas, as forestry machinery can be powerful and have wide "risk zones" in all directions.

Rest assured that our thinning operations are conducted with the utmost care and respect for nature. We strive to maintain the balance between forest management and the preservation of biodiversity within High Lodge. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this important phase of our forest management efforts.

Together, let's ensure the long-term health and sustainability of High Lodge in Thetford Forest.
