Creating new woodland in Tyne & Wear

New woodland for wildlife, people and climate

Barlow Wood is a 47-hectare woodland creation project in Tyne & Wear, designed to deliver benefits for wildlife, people, and the climate.

We're leading England’s largest woodland creation programme and this new woodland in Tyne & Wear will provide homes for wildlife, store carbon and provide local communities with a beautiful green space to explore and enjoy.

By creating this woodland, we'll be connecting existing woodlands in the area. This will make it easier for wildlife to move across the landscape, creating connected nature networks and wildlife corridors. This is vital to support much-loved species including woodland birds, badgers, otters, bats, hedgehogs, common amphibians and invertebrates.

By planting a diverse mix of tree species and creating a range of open habitats, we will give this woodland the best possible chance of adapting and surviving in our changing climate, and from the increased threat of pests and diseases.

With support from partners like you, we will be able to transform this site into a rich, healthy ecosystem that delivers benefits for nature, climate and communities for generations to come.
