Bringing wetland habitats back to life
In North Norfolk, just 20 miles from Cambridge, we're restoring the River Glaven and Hempstead Woods - a degraded wet meadow and river system - to improve biodiversity, water management and ecosystem resilience.
Over time, man-made drainage systems have disconnected the river from its natural flood plain, causing the surrounding meadow to dry out and result in the loss of rare plants.
This restoration project will re-establish the original route of the river and re-establish natural processes by creating a series of leaky dams that slow water flow and reconnect the river with its floodplain. By restoring habitats and scrub, we will allow species-rich grassland to recover and create important habitats for wildlife.
With support from partners like you, this project will deliver lasting benefits for wildlife, water quality, local communities and the wider environment.
