Create a wilder forest and support nature recovery

Wild Newtondale is a rare opportunity to be involved in a truly pioneering nature recovery project, being delivered on an unrivalled scale in the beautiful North York Moors National Park.

At Forestry England we are the driving force behind biodiversity recovery on an unprecedented scale. Our vision is for the nation’s forests to become the most valuable places in the country for wildlife to thrive and expand. As England’s largest land manager, we can restore nature at a landscape scale in a way that few others can.

Set within a dramatic glacial valley, Wild Newtondale includes wetlands, ancient woodland, grasslands, and over 330 hectares of nationally protected habitats (known as Sites of Special Scientific Interest.)

At Wild Newtondale, we are trialling a bold, new approach to forestry. We will plant a more diverse, natural selection of tree species as well as creating a mix of other nature-rich areas such as grasslands, fens and heath.

We will also return important native animals to Wild Newtondale, where they will help restore natural processes and allow other species to flourish. By intervening less, natural processes will be allowed more space to shape the forest landscape.

Wild Newtondale is an exciting opportunity to demonstrate how large-scale restoration can tackle biodiversity loss, improve resilience to climate change, and reconnect landscapes.
