Being connected to nature is fundamental for a healthy, resilient society. Time spent in forests reduces stress, restores wellbeing and strengthens our sense of belonging.
Forests are a shared cultural space, linking heritage, learning, play, adventure and everyday wellbeing. Yet people’s connection with nature is weakening, at precisely the moment we need it most.
Nature is critical infrastructure for human health. Forests save lives, and the nation’s forests are uniquely placed to help people live well for longer.
Our response: bringing forests to life
Over the next five years, we will:
- make forests more welcoming, inclusive and accessible.
- bring forests to life through unforgettable experiences and events.
- expand woodland closer to where people live.
- grow a diverse community of supporters, volunteers and advocates.

Measuring success
By 2031, success will look like:
- we inspired more people to relax, reconnect and create lasting memories, while increasing the economic impact of visits.
- welcoming 300 million visits a year, with a further 26 million active visits through targeted programmes and expanded green social prescribing, helping more people feel good in the forest.
- inspiring more people and partners to care for the nation’s forests, helping them explore trees, landscapes, heritage and culture, and deepen their connection to nature.
- having attracted a new generation of supporters through membership and volunteering, building a community of hundreds of thousands, connecting children with nature and delivering a million volunteer hours to care for forests and strengthen communities.
