Volunteering at Kielder Forest

What can I do at Kielder Forest?

Squirrel Management Volunteer

Pro-actively assist with red squirrel conservation through the control of non-native grey squirrels.

Red squirrels are a native UK species but their numbers have plummeted due to the introduction of the non-native grey squirrel, which outcompetes them for food and spreads the deadly squirrel pox virus. Red squirrels are now restricted to strongholds across the country which have a low numbers of, or no, grey squirrels.

The Squirrel Management Volunteer will be trained and work with Forestry England Wildlife Rangers to trap and dispatch grey squirrels following best practice and legal requirements.

To apply please download the role description below and follow the application instructions by 23 November 2025.
