The Lady of the Woods

Beech is one of our most beautiful and recognisable native trees. Known for its smooth grey bark and bright autumn colours, it creates some of England's most scenic woodlands and avenues. 

Sometimes called the 'Lady of the Woods', beech thrives in woodland shade and can tolerate cold temperatures and exposed conditions better than some other trees. Beech timber is highly valued, and its woodland habitats support a rich variety of plants, fungi and wildlife.

Beech facts and figures

  • Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is commonly found on chalk downlands but grows well on light soil elsewhere.
  • In autumn, beech leaves turn yellow first and then bronze.
  • A mature beech has a dense canopy made up of many branches and can reach 40 metres tall.
  • Beech has a lifespan of 350 years in the wild.
  • Beech woodlands create shady conditions that native bluebells (and other woodland plants) love.

How to identify beech trees

Heading out into the forest? Here are some of the key features of beech:

  • bark: smooth and silver-grey, often remaining unmarked even on mature trees.
  • seeds: spiky husks split to release two triangular seeds or nuts.
  • leaves: pointed and oval in shape, with wavy edges and veins coming out from the central line. They're bright green in spring, turning yellow and then orange in autumn.
  • twigs: shiny and brown with pointed orange buds.

Beech and wildlife

Beech trees provide food and shelter for a variety of woodland wildlife. Their nuts are eaten by birds, mice, squirrels and other mammals, while the leaves support a range of insects.

Mature beech trees can develop cavities and deadwood that provide valuable habitat for birds, bats and invertebrates. The cool, shady conditions beneath beech canopies also create ideal conditions for fungi, mosses and woodland plants.

Ancient beech woodlands are particularly important for biodiversity and support many specialist species that depend on long-established woodland habitats, including bluebells.

How beech is used

Beech produces strong, pale timber with a fine, even grain. It is one of our most important hardwoods and is widely used for furniture making, flooring, joinery and interior wood products.

Its ability to be bent using steam has made beech especially popular for manufacturing chairs and other curved furniture.

Historically, beech timber was used for rifle stocks, brush backs, shoe lasts and a variety of household items. Today it continues to be valued for both traditional craftsmanship and modern timber production.

Beech wood is also commonly used as a fuel and for smoking foods due to its clean-burning qualities.

Beech and the future

Beech is an important species for future forestry because of its timber value, wildlife benefits and ability to grow beneath an existing tree canopy.

Its shade tolerance makes it particularly suitable for continuous cover forestry, a sustainable approach to woodland management that maintains forest cover while creating a diverse mix of tree ages and species.

However, beech does face several challenges. Grey squirrels can strip bark from young trees, affecting growth and timber quality. The changing climate may also pose risks, particularly in southern and eastern England where hotter, drier summers could increase drought stress.

By carefully managing and planting beech alongside a range of other species, we're helping to create resilient forests that can continue to support wildlife, people and sustainable timber production.
