A summer of care - Silk Wood panel audio description

2 young girls crouch down to dig into the soil ready to plant a tree

Summer of care

Between April and October 2024, the focus was on looking after the 3,300 trees that were planted the previous winter to ensure they did well. This work mainly included removing weeds from around the young saplings that would otherwise compete with them for resources such as light, nutrients and water. We also spread mulch (wood chip) to suppress the weeds from growing and to help the soil to retain moisture during dry spells. Most of the mulch was sourced from the ash that had to be felled on site, so that nothing went to waste.

Between April and October ‘24...

  • 2,045 trees mulched & weeded - the rest had mulch mats
  • 34.8 tonnes of mulch spread - lots of this came from the felled ash
  • 397 participants joined us to weed & mulch the trees
  • 1,023 wheelbarrow loads of mulch were moved
  • 97% survival rate - industry standard is 85% so this is incredible!
