Ma

Difficult to define in words, ma implies a pause, or an interval of space. It isn’t the absence of an object, but rather the beauty that can be found within a silence or negative space.

Breathing space to shine

Westonbirt was originally planted by wealthy, Victorian aristocrats the Holford family, using Picturesque landscaping principles, a popular movement at that time. These principles included creating glades and recesses; ‘negative spaces’ that offer visual breaks within the trees to sit and simply ‘be’. 

Central to the aesthetics of Westonbirt was to use dark evergreens, like yew (Taxus baccata), in the landscaping design as a dark backdrop. This effectively creates a living negative space which allows colourful trees to take the foreground and shine!
