Subtle stripes

It’s easy to be distracted by the astonishing colours maples display at this time of year. Yet some are less showy but just as beautiful, especially with age. 

This snakebark maple (Acer davidii) is one such tree: a subtle, unforgettable beauty. Its leaves are simple and understated compared to other maple species, but a closer look at the tree reveals its true charm. The striking green bark marked with fine white lines (that give the tree its common name) develops and deepens as it matures.
