Beyond the trees: unique ways to experience the forest

Coffee, culture and adrenaline

Think forests are just places to look at the trees? Think again. Forests and woodlands are more than rows of trees and muddy paths - they’re living spaces full of stories to share, adventures waiting to happen, and opportunities to connect.

If you haven’t spent quality time under the tree canopy lately, you’re missing out. Take some inspiration from our list and get ready to experience the forest in a whole new way this season.

Walk and talk on the trails

There’s something about walking side by side that makes conversation flow more easily. Find a forest trail near you and head out with a friend or loved one for a catch-up. Whether it’s a deep conversation or a light-hearted ramble, the peace and quiet of the trees gives you space to reconnect.

Need some conversation starters? Our Wellbeing Trails have panels with tips on how to practice mindfulness as you explore, as well as prompting playful activities.

Socialise over coffee and cake

You don’t have to hike or cycle miles to enjoy the peaceful forest vibe. Many now have cosy, independently run cafes or artisan coffee carts tucked among the trees. And forget about people watching – wildlife watching is much more entertaining.

With views better than any high street coffee shop, these are the perfect spots for a laid-back get together over a hot drink and a homemade treat. Sit back and let the magic of the forest wash over you.

Chase the adrenaline rush

Forests may be peaceful and restful, but they can be thrilling too. From testing your nerves on a high-ropes course to riding mountain bike trails that twist and turn over rugged ground, the nation’s forests are great for thrill seekers.

Whether you’re trying something for the first time or you’re already a seasoned pro, there are plenty of ways to get an adrenaline rush in the forest.

Soak up art and culture

With sculpture trails that wind their way between the trees, art installations hidden down mossy paths and national, touring exhibitions, our forests are full of creative surprises. The way art blends with nature invites you to slow down and take a closer look, away from the four walls and hushed voices of a traditional gallery. Discover more about art in the forest.

Get away from it all, for longer

If your idea of a perfect break includes fresh air, peace and quiet, and the closeness of nature, then an overnight stay in the forest should be right up your street. Whether you have your own campervan to park up or want to hire a cosy woodland cabin with everything you need, spending a night under the trees is a chance to switch off and recharge away from the pressures of everyday life.

Put a date in the diary

As well as being perfect places for spontaneous visits, forests are also home to some memorable special events. From atmospheric Halloween trails and magical Christmas light displays to music headliners at Forest Live in the summer, there’s always something worth planning ahead for.

Pencil in the date, book your tickets and look forward to something a little out of the ordinary among the trees.
