Taking a walk in the forest is so much more than stretching your legs. Follow a winding trail into the forest and you’ll soon find that there’s more than meets the eye.
At Forestry England, the nation’s forests in our care are made up of many landscapes, with a range of tree species, wildlife and plenty to see and do. Walking is one of the best ways to experience them, so this national walking month read on to discover the joys of walking in the forest.

Discover the forest as you walk
One of the best parts of walking in the forest is seeing how the landscape changes as you explore. Your first steps might be under a shady tree canopy, before the path twists and widens into an open space with a new view.
Slowing down and walking mindfully is the key to noticing the different landscapes and habitats. Not only is it good for your wellbeing, but it helps you feel more connected to nature too.
You don’t need to be an expert in tree names to appreciate the difference between enclosed woodland and open space – just let your senses do the work.
Explore different forest landscapes
Many of our walking trails guide you through a variety of forest landscapes. On a single route, you might pass through:
- areas of tall trees, where the height creates a sense of shelter.
- younger woodland, with more light and space.
- cleared or felled areas that offer a different perspective.
- quieter corners where the forest feels still and secret.
Each section feels different, but they’re all part of the same forest story.

Did you know? We have more than 800 miles of walking trails waiting to be explored.

Changing views on familiar paths
You don’t need to walk a new route every time you visit a favourite site. Well-known paths can be comforting and part of a familiar routine with friends or family, offering time and space to reconnect.
Changes in the seasons, weather, and even just the time of day can completely change how your favourite forest path feels. Quiet early mornings give way to busy afternoons, just as frost-covered branches become spring buds and summer leaves.
Walk your favourite route at a different time and notice how it feels different.
Forest walks for every pace and ability
Exploring the forest on foot doesn’t have to mean long distances or steep routes. Our waymarked forest trails range from short loops on smooth, accessible terrain to longer, more challenging hikes.
Whether you’re walking with a buggy, using a mobility scooter or testing out hiking poles and high-spec boots, there’s a forest walk for you. You’ll also find benches along the way for when it’s time for a breather.
Some of our bigger sites also have cafes and other visitor facilities to help you make more of your forest walk.
