From autumn colours and winter frost to summer picnics and spring buds, the nation’s forests are open every day of the year. Whatever the season, forests are places of calm and comfort. Spending time in the forest brings with it the chance to slow down, notice the little things, and reconnect.
Access for all
We believe these moments should belong to everyone and are working to make simple changes that support more people to enjoy the forest in their own way. From the freedom of hiring an all-terrain scooter to the peace of a sensory trail, discover ways to feel at home under the tree canopy.

Step-free routes for simpler navigation
Exploring the joys of the forest in a mixed group is simpler than ever with our accessible trails. They have smoother terrain than other forest paths and no physical barriers, such as stiles, making them suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and other mobility aids.
More accessible benches are being installed at forests across the country too. These provide seating comprised of different heights, have handles for manoeuvring in and out of the seat more easily, and feature more ergonomic back rest and seat angles.
Sensory experiences in nature
There’s no doubt that the forest environment is beautiful to look at, but the full experience is about more than sight alone. Our sensory walks are designed to immerse people in the forest fully, and include opportunities to hear birdsong, touch textured surfaces and notice the different scents of the forest after rain.
For neurodivergent visitors, or for anyone who feels more grounded when engaging multiple senses, these trails create space to explore the forest in a comfortable and familiar way.

All-terrain mobility scooter hire
There are many reasons why you may not be able to explore our forests and woodlands on foot, but that shouldn’t be a reason to think they’re not for you.
A number of our sites now provide the opportunity to hire an all-terrain mobility scooter, making it easy and safe to explore more off the beaten track and deeper into the forest.
Inclusive forest play areas
Providing play opportunities suitable for a range of needs and sensitivities is an important way we’re making the forest more accessible and inviting.
Designed to help everyone feel welcome, our inclusive play areas feature a mix of natural materials, quiet zones, adapted and multi-height equipment and sensory elements.
These areas have been created to make all children feel welcome and included, regardless of any additional needs. With sheltered seating and rest stops, they’re also great places for multi-generational groups to explore together too.
