Behind the Trees Walk

Join a member of Bedgebury’s expert tree team for a guided walk exploring the living, working landscape of the National Pinetum.
Discover the projects shaping this world‑class collection, learn about recent conservation successes, and hear what’s next in protecting threatened tree species. Along the way, gain insight into the skills and stories behind global tree conservation.
Best of Bedgebury: A Curator-led Walk
Monday 27 April - 2pm
Discover the world’s most complete collection of conifers on a guided walk led by Bedgebury Pinetum's Curator, Dan Luscombe.
Gain a unique behind-the-scenes insight into this world-class collection, exploring its rich history and evolution, from its founding in 1925 to its vital role today as a global leader in tree conservation. £15 per person.
Conifer Identification for Beginners
Wednesday 6 May - 10 am
With 615 conifer species in six distinct families, it can be hard to know which one is which! Learn how to differentiate between the tree species using the cones, needles and spring buds on this expert-led guided walk.
Twilight Forest Walk
Thursday 4 June - 8.30pm to 11pm
Take a magical twilight walk through Bedgebury Forest with our wildlife ranger as the midsummer light fades. With a bit of luck, you’ll encounter nightjars, woodcock, glow‑worms, bats and even deer as the forest comes alive after dusk.
Midsummer Evening Walk
Thursday 18 June and Monday 22 June - 6.30pm
Join a member of our tree team to experience the peace and tranquillity of the pinetum on a midsummer evening. On this immersive walk, you will take the less-trodden grassy pathways to discover some of the secrets of the pinetum.
Family Map Stick Walk
Thursday 6 August - 10am
Explore the pinetum together as a family, learning about some of the remarkable trees that grow here, and create your own map stick along the way using foraged natural materials to mark each part of your journey. £7 per adult, £2 per child. Adult supervision is required (up to 3 children per adult)
Wonderful Wildlife
Wednesday 9 September - 1.30pm
Bedgebury is home to a remarkable collection of trees, but did you know it also supports a rich variety of wildlife that thrives within the pinetum? Join this guided walk with our learning partners, Kent High Weald Partnership, to discover more.
Autumn Colour
Sunday 4, Friday 9, Saturday 17 and Monday 26 October -10am
Did you know that not all conifers are evergreen? Spot the signs of the changing season and enjoy this colourful guided walk in the world's largest conifer collection.

• Pre-booking is essential.
• Dogs are not permitted on guided walks (except assistance dogs).
• Car parking is not included unless you are a Forestry England member.
• Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the advertised start time.
• All walks are for ages 12+ with adult supervision, except for the Family Map Stick Walk which is for adults and children aged 3+. Maximum 3 children per adult.
• Dress for the weather with sturdy footwear, as walks are outside and do not always stay on paths.
• A survey will be sent to you after the event. You do not have to complete the survey, but doing so will help us when planning for future events.
Walk Information: Approximately 1.5 hours duration and 2.4 kilometres (1.5 miles) distance.
Ticket Price: All guided walks are £7 per person, excluding the Curator-led guided walk which is £15 per person.
Where to meet: Meet in the atrium at the Visitor Centre 10 mins before the start of the walk
Accessibility: Guided walks are mostly on hard-standing stone paths. However, some leave the main path and incorporate grassy and uneven terrain. To check a walk's suitability, email customerrelations@forestryengland.uk or call 0300 068 0400.
