Kisetsukan

Meaning ‘a sense of seasons’, kisetsukan relates to a deep appreciation in the subtle changes of nature. It’s a recognition of 72 micro-seasons and using these to integrate small shifts in everyday life through food, decoration and even fashion.

Hunting the seasons

Whether it’s the first glistening of dew on the grass, the first frost, or chrysanthemums blooming, the 72 seasons invite us to slow down and notice small changes, deepening our connection with nature. 

One season marks the moment when the landscape blazes with autumn colour. In Japan, momijigari (red leaf hunting) brings people together to celebrate the changing season. As autumn unfolds, leaves change colour and fall at different times, across tree species. Our phenology volunteers track these changes contributing to climate research.
