We're creating a new woodland near Cookbury in Devon. The 30-hectare woodland is next to the Cookbury Moor wood and will be open for informal public access for local people to enjoy, alongside becoming a home for thriving wildlife and producing sustainably-grown timber.

The new woodland will be a valuable place for timber, wildlife and local communities. The land will be planted with tree species chosen to match local soil types and expected future climate conditions. The landscape design will aim to improve the site for nature conservation.
We are creating detailed plans for this new site. The woodland at Cookbury will be an important part of the work that we're doing at Forestry England to expand the nation’s forests as part of the Defra Trees Programme.
New woodlands across Devon
Cookbury Wood isn’t the only new woodland we’re creating in the county. Since 2024, we have started work on five new woodlands: Dury Wood, Burriott Wood, Wagaford Wood, Okement Wood, and Fishleigh Wood.
Together, these sites will bring a combined 357 hectares of new woodland to Devon, which is roughly 1.4 square miles.
As well as providing much-needed space for wildlife, storing carbon, and providing new sources of sustainable timber, these new woodlands will help connect green spaces in Devon, making it easier for wildlife to move across the landscape.
