Kielder Castle sits at the heart of Forestry England Kielder. Built by the Duke of Northumberland in the 1770s and after a varied history, it is now a starting point for various outdoor activities and an important community hub for Kielder village. It has been closed to the public since 2020 and we are now beginning refurbishment works.
We have appointed Teeside-based Ashbrook Construction Services to carry our refurbishment works to part of the east wing at Kielder Castle.
These works, funded by DEFRA, will
- Improve the cafe entrance and expanding interior space
- Create a more accessible and welcoming entrance area
- Establish a better orientation space for visitors planning their day at Kielder
- Install a lift to the first floor
Whilst the renovation works takes place Kielder's walking and biking trails ae open for visitors to enjoy, alongside Team Cycles hire and shop next door to the castle.
As the project progresses we will continue to publish updates here, we look forward to welcoming to England's largest forest.
