Activity for: The classroom
Watch this six minute video to find out how Forestry England sustainably manages 1500 forests and woodlands across the country.
This video is aimed at Key Stage 2 aged children to help them to understand how forests are managed sustainably, when it is ok to cut down trees, and how important our forests are. It's perfect for comparing with studies of the Amazon rainforest to give your students an insight of how forests are managed sustainably closer to home.
The video is presented by Leoni, one of our forest rangers, and is split into five sections:
- What is a forest? - Think about what makes up a forest and how they might be different.
- Forests for sustainable timber – Discover how trees can be cut down sustainably.
- Forests for wildlife – Find out about how we are creating homes to look after wildlife.
- Forests for us all – Explore what activities people do when they visit the forest.
- Forests for the future – Discuss the importance of forests and why we need to protect them.
You will see the pause icon throughout the video. This is a chance for you to stop the video and get your class to respond to the questions asked by Leoni, helping them to explore their understanding, discuss their ideas, and learn from each other.
