Activity: Preparing for a forest visit
Watch this seven minute video before you visit your local forest to discover what goes on in the forest, and how Forestry England looks after it.
It will help your students know what to expect from their forest visit and what to look out for while they are there.
The video is presented by Leoni, one of our forest rangers, and is split into five sections:
- What is a forest? - Think about what the forest will look like.
- Forests for sustainable timber – Find out when it is okay to cut down trees.
- Forests for wildlife – Discuss what wildlife you might you see.
- Forests for us all – Explore what activities people do in the forest.
- Forests for the future – Reflect on how important our forests are.
You will see the pause icon throughout the video. This is a chance for you to stop the video and get your class to respond to the questions asked by Leoni, helping them to explore their understanding, discuss their ideas, and learn from each other. It will also help you to find out how familiar your students are with the forest environment.
