Silk Wood

Experience the ultimate blend of nature, fitness and Canines at the CaniX Westonbirt event.  Join fellow Canicross enthusiasts for a thrilling morning of trail running with your canine partner, fostering a unique bond in the heart of the beautiful woodland.   Canicross or CaniX is cross-country running with your dog using the traditional harness and bungee line associated with sled-dog sports, where the sport has its roots, combined with a belt to attach to the runner.  

The 5km marked trail will take you on a tour of Silk wood, with its grassy rides, forest path and quieter glades.

Dogs that are in good health, of any breed can participate.

This event is suitable for those new to Canicross in addition to more experienced runners.

All Spectators and supporters will be required to pay the appropriate admission fee.

This in-person training course will provide you with the skills, experience and certified qualification to run your own Forest School programme. Set in the beautiful grounds of Westonbirt Arboretum, this course is designed to inspire and equip those who would like to broaden or change the way they work and to set up and run sessions working with people, in nature.

Training days which consist of both theory and practical tasks. There are five Units of Study at Level 3:

supporting Learning, Play and Development in the Outdoors observation and Evaluation of Outdoor Learning sustainable Use of Natural Resources teach Outdoor Practical Skills forest School Leader

Be inspired by the Forest School approach to teaching, learning and play and the huge potential that it has to enhance the way children learn and learn how it can support your school curriculum.

Do you just love plants and want to create a gorgeous garden? Do you feel spoilt for choice leaving you not sure what is the right plant to buy? Having designed gardens for the last 20 years I’ll spill the beans on the tried and tested plants I can rely upon to work well in any garden.

No gardening experience needed for this half day workshop. You’ll gain a good understanding of how to select the right plants for your garden plus top tips to help them flourish.

Westonbirt Arboretum

Spend a relaxing day crafting and weaving in a small group of like minded people - absolute beginners are very welcome and all the materials will be provided. Design and build a sculpture for your garden, a bird feeder, an abstract sculpture or willow animal! It’s completely up to you. Your tutor Zoe will be there to guide you with any technical skills you need to finish your piece. Take a break at lunchtime to enjoy a bite from the cafe next door or bring a packed lunch and sit under a tree!

Enjoy delicious, freshly prepared hot and cold refreshments while visiting the arboretum.

The Gruffalo is celebrating his 25th birthday and to celebrate, everyone is invited to take part in a brand-new forest adventure. Trail starts 10 February. 

What to expect

The interactive family trail features all sorts of party-themed activities and games, along with fun facts to teach you about life in the forest for the Gruffalo and other creatures.

Follow the trail to help find the missing party items to give the Gruffalo a birthday to remember. Search for balloons, pine cones, apples and the Gruffalo himself, and complete fun activities and rubbings as you go along.

The trail is located in the Old Arboretum which is our dog free area.

Choose one of our walks at Westonbirt Arboretum and find inspiration in one of the most diverse and beautiful botanical collections in the world.

Spending time amongst the trees and really noticing nature is scientifically proven to boost our mental and physical health. Follow the trail to take a mindful walk through the arboretum that invites you to really relax. 

What to expect 

Themed panels along the trail will invite you to pause, notice and connect with the forest environment around you. 

A forest wellbeing journal is also available to help you get even more benefit from the experience, offering additional mindful things to do while you’re out in the forest and at home.  

Get your copy on-site at the Welcome Building or download your forest wellbeing journal before you visit.  

About the route 

Walk over the Treetop Walkway into Silk Wood to find the starting point. Follow the path as it meanders around The Link up past Maple Loop and back down Willesley Drive. 

All paths are hard and suitable for buggies and mobility aids. 

This trail is supported by Sport England using National Lottery funding.

Hidden Westonbirt - winter family trail: 01 December – 05 March

Discover more about the animals and plants that make the arboretum their home during the winter by exploring our playful family treasure hunt trail.

Simply pick up a collecting bag from the Welcome Building and head over the Tree Top Walkway to find the trail start. Make your way through the treasure hunt by following the clues at each location.

You will find rubbings at each stop, with a total of ten to find. Gather fallen natural winter ‘treasures’ to remind you of your journey.
