Kids will love navigating the route and finding the wooden mushrooms scattered around the forest.  Please note, this trail is not waymarked. Orienteering maps for the trail are available from the visitor centre.

There are over 4 million trees in Grizedale Forest. By completing this trail you will find out which is the most common tree and the most important one for producing timber.

Celebrate World Orienteering Week at Bedgebury

Did you know we have four different routes for walkers and runners, suitable for children to advanced orienteers?

Stretch your legs and minds by picking up a FREE orienteering map (normally £2) between 18 – 26 May from our Visitor Centre.

Boughton Brake is a great place to explore, with an extensive network of paths and tracks. There are also plenty of benches located throughout the wood where you can stop for a rest and take in the natural beauty.

If you feel up for a challenge, check out the orienteering course.

The wood is not suitable for horse riding but a bridleway does run along the eastern side of the wood and can be used to get from Walesby to Boughton.

Formerly two colliery sites, Silverhill Wood has been transformed into a beautiful woodland through a process of coal washing, engineering, landscaping, fertilising and planting. Its mixture of rich broadleaf and conifer trees, open meadows and ponds make it a woodland not to be missed! 

Why not explore the woodland on the orienteering course, speed through the trees on two wheels or stop by the dog selfie area!

Trail is located in the Old Arboretum which is our dog-free area.

Children up to eight years old taking part in Children’s University can use a simple map to try and find twelve Gruffalo markers, and answer the question related to each marker in the Gruffalo orienteering leaflet.

With way marked trails for woodland walks, children’s play areas, Go Ape, orienteering trails and even a dog activity trail, you will not be stuck for something to do at Cannock Chase Forest, located north of Birmingham in the West Midlands.

Before you begin the trail, pick up a Gruffalo orienteering leaflet with a certificate and map for just £1.50.

Family on bike ride on forest path

Play, walk, run or ride your way round Fermyn Woods, a stunning ancient woodland set just south of Corby.

With walking trails, orienteering routes, several play areas and a cafe, you will not be short of things to do. If you keep an eye out you'll spot hidden treasures all over, from red kites to deer.

The Visitor Centre is open most days and is managed by Northamptonshire County Council.

We have an open access policy for horse riders within Kings Forest.

There are no designated riding trails but see OS explorer map 229 to orientate yourself.

The forest is also open to walkers and cyclists so please be aware of other users. Throughout the year Kings Forest has various recreational events - please take note of any marshals and safety signage in place during your visit.

If you venture into the deep dark wood you may bump into the Gruffalo!

Mouse, Fox, Snake, Owl, Gruffalo’s Child and the Gruffalo himself are all hidden in Wyre Forest. They can be found along our Easy Access trail. 

Young fans of the Gruffalo can also take part in Gruffalo Orienteering at Wyre Forest – a fun, map-reading challenge.

Based just a short walk from Adderstone Field and Dixon's Hollow car park, Dalby Activity Centre can host an exciting day or half day of outdoor activities including paintball, airsoft, archery and even tree climbing!

The wood takes it's name from a sizable gritstone outcrop called Black Rocks and forms part of a larger woodland called Cromford Moor. The area is managed in partnership with Derbyshire County Council Countryside Service.

The wood is situated on a hill with splendid views of the Derwent Valley and contains remains of quarries and other workings.

There is something for everyone at this beautiful lakeside setting.

Adrenaline seekers can challenge themselves at Go Ape Tree Top Challenge. For those with energy left to burn there is Forest Segway or a range of running trails from 2km to 10km routes.

Sence Valley lake

Located north-west of Leicester, discover Sence Valley’s history. Once part of a large coal mine that closed in 1996, Forestry England planted 98,000 trees in 1998, transforming the valley into a haven for wildlife and visitors. In 2018  a further 48 hectares (102 acres) of the original opencast was acquired which has now been planted with 100,000 trees which will develop into a mature woodland.

Delamere Forest, within easy reach of both Manchester and Liverpool, is a place to let off steam, escape the crowds and find peace in the heart of the forest.

There’s plenty to keep the little ones entertained and everyone can enjoy a great low-cost family day out.

Multi- Activity Holiday Camps are perfect for children who like to be active and on the move without playing traditional sports. Introduce them to new and exciting activities, and create a fun-filled experience.  

Activities include: fencing, archery and orienteering. 

Explore the forest in a different way.

Our bike hire partner, Forest Cycle Hire, offer guided rides with qualified mountain bike leaders that are experienced, police checked, and first aid trained. They have been guiding rides through the forest for years, providing happy memories for many groups from schools, youth groups and scouts to families and corporate groups.

Explore Haldon Forest Park with an all-terrain mobility vehicle

We’ve partnered with Countryside Mobility (a charity initiative, operated by Living Options) to offer all-terrain mobility scooters (“Trampers”) for hire. Trampers are available to any visitors aged 14+ with limited mobility. You do not have to be registered disabled to hire a Tramper.

Grandfather Oak play area

Swing, climb, hide and spark their imaginations at the Grandfather Oak playground in Dalby. 

Test your climbing skills on this fun playground with so much for the mind to explore. Hide away in our wooden teepees, clamber on the climbing frame or make your way round the playground and find your joy in the wildplay area. 

Den building is highly encouraged!

Generic woodland

Located approximately two miles north of Truro, Idless Woods is a stunning woodland with a diverse range of wildlife.

Part of the Suffolk Coasts and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Tunstall Forest has a range of beautiful scenery you can explore.

Tunstall Forest consists of coniferous plantations, broadleaved belts and heathland areas which link up with both Tunstall and Blaxhall Common. These areas are great for ground nesting birds such as the Nightjar and Woodlark, so keep your eyes peeled for these species.

As a former coal mine, Colliers Wood forms an interconnected area of woodlands and grassland surrounding Higher Folds. The various footpaths offer quite a lot of opportunity for exploration and discovery.

There has been recent planting near Cooling Lane which is now coming into fruition. From Queensway, there is access to an area once used by bird watchers.

Colliers Wood is located approximately ten miles west of Manchester.
